This book is a complement to the aviation history Web site known as www.dmairfield.org.  The Web site celebrates the pilot transient Register from the Davis-Monthan Airfield, Tucson, AZ that lay open for pilots and passengers to sign between February 6, 1925 and November 26,1936. Recorded in the Register are 3,689 signatures by 1,962 unique pilots, flying 2,129 unique aircraft.  They carried 2,061 unique passengers.

For the first time ever, this book presents the pilot and navigator's stories written by them within days of their record-setting adventure. Pilot Art Goebel and navigator William V. Davis, Jr. take us with them on the Woolaroc, their orange and blue Travel Air monoplane (NX869) as they enter the hazardous world of Golden Age trans-oceanic air racing. This book includes new and unpublished images and texts, and a very special, 15-page letter from Davis to his soon-to-be wife. The book is a gripping tale of foresight and perseverance, with lessons for today.

FOREWORD by the navigator's son, William V. Davis, III. Afterword by Carl Gregory, Tulsa Air & Space Museum.

Your Old Pilot says:

"Art Goebel was one o' them pilots who signed the Register (you can see him on the left in the image on the book cover). He and his navigator Bill Davis won the great Dole Race. Back in August of '27, I think it was.

"Goebel comes in here and lands a few times. Don't recall Davis ever bein' here, though. Goebel was tall an' handsome as I remember.

"It was quite a do when he showed up, because all of us wanted to meet the guy who had flown across the Pacific the first time for money. They won lots of it from the Dole race for gettin' to Honolulu first.

"It was kind of quiet the day he came in, is it October, I can't really remember. But we all have a chance to talk with him and we kept him around from late morning to mid-afternoon just throwing the bull and such. He'd just been to New York and was headed back to California as I recall. We offered to buy him lunch, but all he wanted was a bottle of milk. Runs a flight school now out in Missouri I think.

"I often wonder what was it like to fly from Oakland to Honolulu in a single-engine plane during August 1927. I wonder was the 25,000 dollar prize worth it? The Race is a big deal back then. But, did the fame balance the risk? I think our author and Webby guy has done a good job tellin' us. Order out a book an' see for yourself."
